Gmail's Amazing Expanding Storage Space
In the course of reading my Gmail this morning, I noticed (well, my wife did -- she's the perceiver of the family) that the storage space was edging upwards. When I first noticed it, around 7:00am, it was at 1200MB (the normal amount is 1000MB). Fifteen minutes later, as I write this, it is up to 1271MB. Go Gmail!
I couldn't find confirmation on the Google site that this is, indeed, the April 1 joke this year, but I did find what looks like a facinating new Google product: the Google Gulp (quench your thirst for knowledge).
Addendum: Well, Google certainly is tricky. If you're not already logged into Gmail, you see this little announcement:
On the eve of Gmail's one-year birthday, our engineers were toiling away furiously. Notes scribbled all over the walls. Complex calculations on napkins and empty pizza boxes. Millions of M&Ms.
The result?... starting today, we're beginning the roll-out of our new and top secret Infinity+1 storage plan. The key features are:
Write, don't worry. You want to stop caring about storage. We want to keep giving you more. Today, and beyond.
The gift that keeps on giving. 1336.255068 megabytes of storage (and counting) for every user. [Note: The number on this page's counter is obviously in sync with the storage counter when you're logged in. Verra tricky.]
And going to the new features page, you see this:
G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.
Pretty lame if it is a hoax. Pretty cool if it is a pledge.
BTW, at 9:10 I'm up to 1339 MB. Guess we'll see if Gmail hits 2 Gs by days end and what I have when I wake up tomorrow morning.
