Knoppix and abc
A French website is offering Linux Knoppix Live-CD containing a whole operating system and work environment for creating, displaying and playing abc tunes and creating interactive fiction. An interesting mix! I'm largely quoting an email that was sent to the abcusers listserv about this.
The main page for this project is at http://esclinux.tk (with screenshots), while the iso containing the image cd can be found on these servers, as well:
It's slightly over 200 Mb in size, and should run on most x86 based computers (PC).
This live-cd simplifies using abc software under Linux because nothing needs to be installed on the host computer. The abc files can be imported and exported with floppy, usb keys or from the hard drive. It's also possible to burn as a second session all the abc files you need in a special folder of the cd.
Some programs included on the CD are:
- abc2midi : convert abc files to midi
- abcm2ps : convert abc files to postscript
- gv : postscripts and pdf viewer
- tkabc : abc editors
- timidity : midi player
- xjed : ascii editor with tools for abc
- skink : abc viewer and editor in java
- runabc : great IDE for working with abc
- nedit and xjed : text editors
- xfe : files explorer
- aterm : terminal emulator
- xpdf : pdf viewer (for some manuals)
- dillo : html browser
